Description
The ATA PE-4V1 Wired Safety Beam Kit is a genuine 2-wire photoelectric safety system designed specifically for compatible newer-generation ATA and B&D sectional garage door operators.
The system uses a transmitter and receiver positioned opposite each other across the garage door opening to create an invisible infrared safety beam. If a vehicle, person, pet or other obstruction interrupts the beam while the door is closing, the connected operator can stop or reverse the door to help prevent contact.
The PE-4V1 uses ATA’s 2-wire safety beam technology, providing a permanent hard-wired safety solution without the batteries or wireless base station required by wireless PE beam systems. ATA identifies the complete PE-4V1 kit as Order No. 86925.
👁️ Additional Garage Door Safety
The PE-4V1 provides an additional level of obstruction protection for compatible automatic garage doors.
The transmitter and receiver are installed opposite each other near floor level, creating an invisible infrared beam across the garage door opening.
If the beam is interrupted while the garage door is closing, the operator can detect the obstruction condition and respond before the door reaches the object.
This helps provide additional protection for:
- Vehicles
- People
- Children
- Pets
- Bicycles
- Equipment
- Stored items
- Other objects within the garage door opening
🛑 Non-Contact Obstruction Detection
One of the main advantages of photoelectric safety beams is their ability to detect an obstruction without requiring the garage door to physically contact it.
Force-based obstruction detection generally relies on the opener detecting an unexpected increase in resistance.
The PE-4V1 instead monitors the garage door opening itself.
If a vehicle, person or other object interrupts the infrared beam, the connected operator can stop or reverse the closing door according to its programmed safety operation.
🔌 2-Wire Safety Beam Technology
The PE-4V1 uses a simple 2-wire connection to the compatible garage door operator.
ATA describes the system as using modulated sensing technology similar to that used in its wireless safety beam systems.
The wired design provides:
- Permanent hard-wired operation
- Simple 2-wire connection
- No wireless base station required
- No safety beam batteries to replace
- Reliable communication with the operator
- Reduced ongoing maintenance
- Ideal installation where suitable wiring is available
🔋 No Batteries Required
Unlike ATA’s WPE series of wireless safety beams, the PE-4V1 does not require batteries in the safety beam sensors.
The transmitter and receiver are connected directly through the wired safety beam circuit.
This eliminates the need to periodically replace safety beam batteries and makes the PE-4V1 particularly suitable where a permanent hard-wired installation is preferred.
🏠 Ideal for New Garage Door Installations
The PE-4V1 is particularly well suited to new garage door installations.
Safety beam cabling can be installed at the same time as the garage door operator, allowing the wiring to be neatly concealed or incorporated into the garage.
This provides a clean finished installation while adding photoelectric obstruction detection from the beginning.
🔄 Ideal for Pre-Wired Garage Doors
The PE-4V1 is also an excellent option where an existing garage has already been wired for photoelectric safety beams.
Rather than using a wireless system, the existing cabling can potentially be utilised to provide a permanent connection between the operator and safety beam system, subject to the wiring being suitable.
This makes the PE-4V1 ideal for:
- New garage door installations
- Existing pre-wired garages
- Replacement safety beam installations
- Auto-Close installations
- Safety upgrades
- Existing compatible ATA operators
- Existing compatible B&D operators
🚗 Helps Protect Vehicles
Vehicles are one of the most common reasons for installing photoelectric safety beams.
A vehicle may occasionally remain partially within the garage door opening while manoeuvring, loading or unloading.
If the garage door begins closing while the vehicle is interrupting the PE-4V1 beam, the operator can detect the obstruction and stop or reverse the closing cycle.
This provides additional protection before the garage door physically reaches the vehicle.
🐕 Additional Protection for Children & Pets
The PE-4V1 also provides additional protection where children or pets regularly move through the garage door opening.
Because the infrared beam is positioned close to floor level, it can detect many low-level obstructions that may otherwise be difficult for someone operating the garage door to see.
This makes photoelectric safety beams a valuable addition to frequently used residential garage doors.
📐 100mm Safety Beam Height
Correct positioning of the PE-4V1 is essential.
ATA specifies that the transmitter and receiver should be positioned in direct line-of-sight with the infrared beam approximately 100mm above floor level.
ATA’s installation instructions indicate that this can be achieved by positioning the bottom of the transmitter and receiver approximately 65mm above floor level.
The sensors should also be installed as close as practical to the garage door opening.
☀️ Correct Receiver Positioning
ATA recommends positioning the receiver on the shaded side of the garage door opening where possible.
The transmitter may be positioned in sun or shade, while placing the receiver away from direct sunlight can help provide reliable infrared detection.
Correct positioning and alignment are important for dependable safety beam operation.
💡 Opener-Assisted Beam Alignment
Compatible operators provide an alignment feature to assist when setting up the PE-4V1.
ATA’s installation instructions describe using the opener’s main light as an alignment indicator:
- Bright light – beams correctly aligned
- Dull light – beams misaligned or obstructed
This provides a simple visual method of confirming correct beam alignment during installation.
🔄 Auto-Close Functionality
Installing safety beams can allow Auto-Close functionality to be used on compatible garage door operators.
Auto-Close automatically closes the garage door after a predetermined period rather than requiring the user to manually send another close command.
This can help prevent the garage door from accidentally being left open.
Because the garage door may begin closing automatically, photoelectric safety beams provide an important method of monitoring the opening for an obstruction.
📱 Smart Garage Door Applications
Photoelectric safety beams can also form an important part of compatible smart garage door installations.
Where a garage door can be controlled remotely, the person operating the door may not always have direct line-of-sight to the garage opening.
The PE-4V1 provides an additional method of detecting an obstruction within the doorway before or during a closing cycle.
The exact safety requirements depend on the garage door operator, its configuration and the smart-control system being used.
🔧 Suitable for Existing Operator Upgrades
The PE-4V1 can be added to compatible existing ATA and B&D garage door operators.
This allows additional photoelectric obstruction protection to be incorporated without replacing the complete garage door opener.
It can be particularly useful when:
- Adding safety beams to an existing opener
- Enabling compatible Auto-Close functionality
- Adding compatible smart-control functions
- Replacing damaged safety beams
- Improving vehicle protection
- Upgrading an existing automation system
🧹 Low-Maintenance Safety Solution
The hard-wired design makes the PE-4V1 a relatively low-maintenance safety system.
Because there are no safety beam batteries to replace, routine maintenance primarily involves keeping the sensors clean, correctly aligned and securely mounted.
Periodic maintenance should include:
- Cleaning the transmitter and receiver lenses
- Checking sensor alignment
- Inspecting mounting brackets
- Inspecting safety beam wiring
- Checking electrical connections
- Testing obstruction detection
- Confirming correct operator response
🆚 Wired vs Wireless Safety Beams
ATA offers both wired and wireless photoelectric safety beam systems.
The PE-4V1 is generally ideal where suitable safety beam wiring is already installed or can easily be provided during installation.
A wired system provides:
- Permanent connection
- No batteries to replace
- No wireless base station
- Simple 2-wire installation
- Low ongoing maintenance
A wireless safety beam kit may instead be preferable where running new cables around an existing garage door opening would be difficult.
The correct system should always be selected according to the garage door operator model.

⚠️ Please Note
The PE-4V1 uses ATA’s 2-wire photoelectric safety beam system and should not automatically be assumed compatible with other ATA or B&D garage door operators.
ATA and B&D have produced multiple generations of wired and wireless safety beam systems. Compatibility should therefore be confirmed against the exact operator model before ordering.
ATA specifies that PE safety beams must be installed where the closing force at the bottom edge of the door exceeds 400N (approximately 40kg force).
The PE-4V1 must be correctly wired, positioned, aligned and tested before use. The system should also be periodically tested to confirm that interrupting the infrared beam causes the garage door operator to respond correctly.
Safety beams do not replace the requirement for a correctly balanced, mechanically sound and properly maintained garage door.
