Safetech Adjustable Tension Hinge – TopKLIK – SHG-90
The Safetech TopKLIK SHG-90 is a premium adjustable-tension self-closing gate hinge designed for pedestrian, access and pool gates requiring reliable automatic closing with the ability to fine-tune the closing force after installation.
Featuring Safetech’s patented tension adjustment system, the SHG-90 allows the self-closing force to be increased through four defined tension levels using the supplied adjustment tool.
Manufactured from glass-fibre reinforced engineered polymer with rust-resistant stainless-steel pins and springs, the TopKLIK combines excellent corrosion resistance with a substantial maximum holding capacity of 70kg and closing capacity of 45kg.
The SHG-90 is Safetech’s standard no-leg TopKLIK model, providing a compact mounting arrangement suitable for a wide range of metal and timber pedestrian gates.
🔄 Adjustable Self-Closing Tension
One of the major advantages of the TopKLIK SHG-90 is its adjustable self-closing spring tension.
Instead of relying on a permanently fixed spring force, the installer can increase the closing tension after the hinges have been installed.
This allows the gate’s closing action to be fine-tuned to suit the individual installation.
🔊 Patented KLIK Adjustment System
Safetech’s patented tension adjustment system provides four defined tension levels.
As the supplied adjustment tool is turned clockwise, the mechanism produces a distinct click as the tension increases.
This allows the installer to accurately keep track of the amount of spring tension applied to each hinge.
The tension should be increased one click per hinge at a time, checking the gate operation after each adjustment.
⚙️ Four Tension Levels
Each SHG-90 hinge provides up to four tension adjustments.
This allows the closing force to be increased progressively rather than applying excessive spring tension immediately.
For best operation, Safetech recommends aiming for approximately equal tension settings between the upper and lower hinges where possible.
The gate should be tested after each adjustment.
🔑 Simple Adjustment Tool
The TopKLIK is supplied with the adjustment tool required to alter the hinge tension.
To increase tension:
- Insert the adjustment tool
- Turn clockwise
- Increase one click at a time
- Adjust each hinge progressively
- Test gate closing after each adjustment
The reverse end of the adjustment tool can be used to release the tension and return the mechanism towards its neutral position.
The adjustment mechanism is designed to operate clockwise when increasing tension.
💪 70kg Maximum Holding Capacity
Safetech specifies a maximum holding weight of 70kg for the SHG-90 hinge pair under its standard test conditions.
Holding capacity refers to the gate weight the hinge pair is capable of supporting.
Gate width and height also affect the leverage placed on the hinge system and must be considered when selecting suitable gate hardware.
🚪 45kg Self-Closing Capacity
Safetech specifies a closing weight of up to 45kg for the SHG-90 under its standard test conditions.
Holding capacity and closing capacity are different specifications.
For the SHG-90:

Where automatic self-closing operation is required, the 45kg closing capacity is the important rating when determining suitability.
↕️ Vertical Adjustment
In addition to adjustable spring tension, the SHG-90 provides vertical adjustment.
This assists the installer with correctly positioning the gate relative to the post, latch and surrounding fence.
Correct gate alignment is particularly important for self-closing installations because the gate must consistently return to the correct position for the latch to engage.
🚫 No-Leg Mounting Design
The SHG-90 is the standard no-leg version of Safetech’s TopKLIK hinge.
Its compact mounting arrangement makes it suitable for gate installations where additional support legs are not required or where available mounting space is limited.
For applications requiring Safetech’s two-leg mounting configuration, the SHG-90L TopKLIK should be selected instead.

🏊 Suitable for Pool Gate Applications
Safetech lists the SHG-90 TopKLIK for compatible pool-gate applications.
The adjustable self-closing mechanism allows the gate’s closing force to be set so the gate reliably returns to the closed position and engages a suitable self-latching pool gate latch.
For pool-gate installations, Safetech specifies that the distance between the tops of the hinges must be at least 900mm.
Where this spacing cannot be achieved, the supplied hinge safety cone must be installed on the bottom hinge.
The complete gate installation must still comply with all applicable pool-barrier regulations and requirements.
🛡️ Hinge Safety Cone
For pool-gate installations where the tops of the hinges are positioned less than 900mm apart, Safetech specifies that the supplied safety cone must be fitted to the bottom hinge.
The safety cone is designed to reduce the possibility of the lower hinge being used as a foothold by a child attempting to climb the gate.
Correct installation is particularly important where the TopKLIK forms part of a regulated pool barrier.

The SHG-90 can be combined with a compatible self-latching gate latch to create a reliable self-closing gate system.
When the gate is released, the spring-loaded hinges return the gate towards its closed position so the latch can engage.

⚠️ Please Note
Safetech specifies a maximum holding weight of 70kg and a maximum closing weight of 45kg for the SHG-90.
These ratings are based on a standard test gate measuring approximately 900mm wide x 1200mm high.
Gates exceeding these dimensions can place additional leverage on the hinges and may reduce their effective holding and self-closing capacity.
The 70kg holding capacity should not be confused with the 45kg closing capacity. For a self-closing installation, the gate must remain within the appropriate closing capacity.
When adjusting the hinges, Safetech recommends increasing the tension one click per hinge at a time and checking the gate after each adjustment. A maximum of four tension clicks per hinge is permitted.
When used on a pool gate, the gate must be capable of self-closing from any required open position.
For pool gates, Safetech specifies a minimum 900mm distance between the tops of the hinges. If this cannot be achieved, the supplied safety cone must be installed on the bottom hinge.
The SHG-90 is designed for non-automated gates. Use on automated gates may affect hinge performance.
The complete gate, hinge and latch installation must comply with all applicable regulations where used as part of a pool or safety barrier.
